The desktop
- A notch at the top of the screen. When something finishes, it says so in one line, then goes quiet.
- A search that finds apps, files, settings and sums, and hands anything else to the web or to your agent.
- Colours taken from your wallpaper, so the whole desktop changes with it.
- Tacit Sans, Tacit Sans Display, Tacit Sans Condensed and Tacit Code, with Tacit's own symbols and cursor.
The apps

Updates
Updates download in the background. When they're ready, the notch says so once and offers Tonight or Restart. Either way they install while the computer restarts, without a password. Tonight waits for the charger and a locked screen.
Setup
Start Tacit from a USB stick to try it. Setup installs it next to Windows, shrinking Windows to make room, or instead of Windows. See Install.
Hardware
- Laptops and desktops with Intel or AMD chips, started in UEFI mode.
- Intel and AMD graphics, and NVIDIA graphics on NVIDIA's open driver.
- Wi-Fi, including older Broadcom cards, Bluetooth, cameras, fingerprint readers, Thunderbolt, rotation sensors and printers.
- Firmware updates for computers whose makers publish them.
Limits in 1.0
- Secure Boot has to be off for Tacit to start.
- Computers that only start in the old BIOS mode aren't supported.
- To install next to Windows, BitLocker has to be off and Windows shut down fully.
